Warren & Friends

A few years ago we decided as a staff to create a school mascot. We really had no idea what this would be, nor what it would look like, so I invited the children to write a story for us. What we did know is that it would be called ‘Warren’

I remember all too well the story that won and although it has now been lost, I can recount the story reasonably well.

The story was about a monkey who wanted to visit the world. He escaped the jungles in Africa on a large ship which eventually ended up in Portsmouth. At this point Warren the Monkey got off the ship and started wandering about looking for a place to call home. He walked all through Portsmouth without success and headed towards Leigh Park. Again, he stopped at numerous places but each time was disappointed. Then one day he reached Warren Park Primary School. He knocked on the door. He was tired and hungry and more importantly lonely. Within the school he was welcomed with open arms, the children were wonderful to him, the staff fed him and everyone made him feel welcome. At last Warren had found home, a home that he has lived in ever since. And not surprisingly he invited his friends, Theodore, Lavinia, Esther and Laurence to join him. And what a bunch they are joining together to celebrate the school motto of ‘Listen, Think, Learn and Enjoy’.

I’m the health and safety monkey and the leader of the ‘Green’ team. I am a little quieter than most of my friends. It is important that we all ensure we are safe and that the school is also a safe environment. Bullying has no part to play at Warren Park and part of my role is to ensure all children are kind to each other. I am known as the thinker.

I run the ‘Yellow’ team and am known as the learner. There is nothing better than reading and working as hard as possible. This will enable me to do very well in the future. I especially love new things and love being in the outside classroom. I hope you enjoy working as much as l do. The problem is l can sometimes be a bit naughty too.

British value = Equality

It is really important that we listen. Without listening we will not know what is happening. I am both the leader of the ‘Blue team’ and the listening monkey. I like going into the playground and listening to all the children playing. I also like going into the staffroom and listening to the teachers.

British value = Democracy

I am the old man of the monkeys. When l see them l try to remember what it was like to be young. The other five monkeys are always rushing around and getting up to things. Hopefully I can calm them down on occasions and make them realise why we are at Warren Park. They are most of the time very good though.
