This term is the start of our history study. This takes place over the two half terms and takes place both in the class and on some exciting field studies. We wanted the children to experience a historic enquiry. They have been looking at their question in the context of our local area. Over the next few weeks we will be learning some historical skills and applying them in the field.
Years 1 and 2 historical enquiry is: Why was the school built?
Using this question, our local study included a field trip around the perimeter of the school looking at the buildings including the church and the shops.
What is the oldest house you could find?
What is the newest house you could find?
Can you explain the evidence you found to back your answer up?
Why were the church and the shops built?
Has the Warren always had people living there?
When the children worked in the classrooms they used a bank or historical resources. Year 1 and 2 had a museum in a box, which showed them what life was like in Leigh park from 1950’s onward.
Years 3 and 4 historical enquiry is:. How would you get to London in 1860-1960?
Using this question, our local study was looking at Havant railway station and the Hayling Billy line. The children looked at buildings and facilities to see if they could spot historical clues.
What evidence did you find that this is a train station?
How do you know there used to be a railway line on the Hayling Billy line?
Year 3 and 4: back in the class the children were able to expand on what they had seen on their study and use the resources from The Spring (Havant Museum) to see if they could gather some additional historical evidence. For these children being able to see how travel had developed in Havant and surrounding areas was really helpful.
Years 5 and 6 historical enquiry is: Where did people go if they needed help?
Using this question, our local study started at the police station in Havant. The children went to the job centre, health centre, church, and civic offices. When they looked at these places they were looking for historical clues to see if they could dates them.

Year 5 and 6: back in the class the children were able to expand on what they had seen on their study and use the resources from The Spring (Havant Museum) to see if they could gather some additional historical evidence. For these children looking at how medical help had changed over the years enabled them to see why areas and buildings had changed use.
