Drop off and pick up

Children can enter school through any of the gates. In the morning, children will enter through their Year 4 classroom door.

Please remember, school starts at 08:45. If your child is late (arriving after 8.50), they must enter through the office and sign in.

In the afternoon, children will leave school via their Year 4 classroom door.

Things to bring into school

We have limited storage space.  Please only allow your child to bring in:

•         Packed lunch box / bag (If they have packed lunch)

•         A water bottle

•         A warm coat (if it is cold)

•         Reading and Times Table record books

Things not to bring into school

We kindly ask that children don’t bring in:

•         Large rucksacks, bags or P.E. bags as this helps us avoid clutter in the corridors.

•         Cuddly toys and other things such as pencil cases and play things.

COSMIC

Your child’s COSMIC time will be on Tuesday morning.

P.E timetable

Indoor PE – Friday PM

Outside Games – Tuesday PM

We ask that your child is sent into school wearing their PE kit on PE days.

For P.E we ask that children wear:

  • Usual school white polo shirt or t-shirt and sweatshirt/fleece
  • Shorts, joggers, leggings or tracksuit bottoms (black, grey or blue)
  • Trainers or plimsoles not school shoes
  • We ask that children do not wear jeans, football kits or clothing with motifs on PE days

We have spare kit in the year group for any children that do not come into school wearing appropriate PE kit.

Earrings should not be worn to school on PE days. If ears have been newly pierced, then you should send your child in with surgical tape covering them up. We only allow small stud earrings in school at any time - sleepers or dangly earrings are not permitted for health and safety reasons.

Reading

Reading is a fundamental, key skill which opens up the whole school curriculum for children and we look forward to working hard with you and your child to further develop their reading skills. Your child will bring a reading book home every evening and we would ask that you read with your child as often as possible – a minimum of three times per week. Children should hand their Reading Record in at school every Friday so that we can review and celebrate their progress. Children who do not read at home will be invited to come along to our weekly reading club at playtime. Unfortunately, there is a charge for lost books and reading records. Working together will ensure we maximise your child’s progress.

Times Tables

The children will also receive a Times Tables Record. This is to be used by you and your child to record their Tables practise and it also contains some ideas in it about how you can best support them at home.  We would encourage children to practice their Tables a minimum of 4 times per week and to ensure that they bring their record in every day so that we can record and celebrate their progress.

Year 4 Multiplication Check

During the Summer term, the children will sit the Year 4 Multiplication Check. The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Your child will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. We will be working incredibly hard over the year to engage the children in a huge variety of multiplication challenges and activities and we would be extremely grateful if you could encourage and challenge the children as much as possible at home.

During Year 4, we will send a range of booklets and times tables activities home but will also offer additional challenges on Times Table Rock Stars which is accessible online through your child’s Wonde login. www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check is also a fantastic website to check out.

Behaviour

Behaviour is managed as per the school behaviour policy.  We have many incentives in place to reward and celebrate positive behaviour. We also have a zone-board in both classrooms which is used to support our approach to behaviour.  If your child finishes the day at the top of the board, they earn credits towards educational rewards.  On rare occasions, a child may finish the day at the bottom of the zone board and, in these instances, they may be asked to stay in during break time on the following day where we will support them to reflect on the choices they have made.

We are here to help!

We are looking forward to working together over the coming year to achieve the best for your child.  Whilst we make every effort to answer questions at drop-off and pick-up, we might not always be able to chat at these times.  If we are unable to answer questions at these times, we can also be contacted via the school office.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

                        Year 4 Team

Year 4, Spring term 2025-26

Looking back on our Autumn term, we were so pleased with the way that the children settled into Year 4. They showed us very good learning behaviours and, as a result, they are all making progress.

As we move into the Spring Term (we hope that you had a lovely Christmas break) we look forward to the children making even more progress whilst enjoying all of the topics we will cover in 2026.

Spring Term Learning:

English

In Spring 1, we will be exploring the theme ‘Finding Freedom’ through a variety of books: Henry’s Freedom Box, The Undefeated, Tar Beach and Varmints. These books will inspire us to write persuasively and describe settings. In Spring 2, our theme is ‘Exploration and Discovery’ where our main text driver will be Junko Tabei, a historical novel based on the real life of the first woman to climb Mount Everest. Our writing will include a first person letter and a newspaper report.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to retrieve our existing knowledge of the 4 operations. During the first few weeks we will be working with fractions and decimals. The other topics we will cover are: Addition and Subtraction, Geometry, Time, Multiplication and Division, Fractions (again) and Statistics. We look forward to developing the children’s skills and applying them to reasoning and problem-solving activities.  In view of the MTC in 2026, a key focus throughout the term will be Times Tables. On top of the support we will offer in school, we will expect the children to practice regularly at home and we really appreciate your support with this.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about Sound. We will carry out a number of experiments to embed our knowledge and answer the question: How do sounds travel from where they are made to our ears and what affects how loud or high they sound?”

 Our focus areas will be

What sound is: Vibrations and how they create sound.

How sound travels: Through solids, liquids, and gases.

Sources of sound: Objects that vibrate to make sound.

Pitch and volume: How changing vibrations affects pitch (high/low) and volume (loud/quiet).

How we hear: The role of the ear and sound waves.

Distance and sound: How sound gets quieter as you move away.

Materials and sound: How different materials affect sound (e.g., muffling or amplifying).

Echoes and reflection: How sound bounces off surfaces.

History

History this term will be covered by the Cosmic Curriculum Team.

Art

In Art, we are learning about an artist called Bob Ross. He is a painter who uses acrylic paints focusing on Texture and Line. We will apply our learning to a piece involving Mountains and Earthquakes.

Music

With Listen2Me, we’ll be playing Jumbie Jams (steel pans) which are a brand new offering from Hampshire Music Service. In Spring 2, as part of ‘The Power of Music’, we’ll also have a series of World Music Workshops.

Spanish

In Spanish, we are learning about hobbies and how to say what we like to do in our spare time.

Computing

In Computing we are using Scratch to further our understanding of coding.

Cosmic

Each Tuesday afternoon, our children experience our Cosmic curriculum.  See our Long Term plans to find out which topics are being covered each half-term.

P.E.

In P.E. we will be learning how to play Tennis (outside) and we will also be doing some Gymnastics (inside).

R.E.

In R.E we will be learning about ‘Rites of Passage - Journey of Life’. The religions of focus will include Humanism and Sikhism.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.

Please ensure that you continue reading with your child at home as this will benefit your child in all aspects of school life. Please also keep encouraging your child to practice their times tables.  A final reminder that children need to bring in their record books every Friday.

If you have any questions or need to discuss your child’s progress with us, we will be happy to discuss these briefly at the gate in the morning or to organise a longer meeting at an appropriate time.
