Welcome to Year 5!
We have been really excited to welcome the children back to school and to start their Year 5 journey into the Upper Juniors. The children have made a great start and have settled well into our new routines and structures.
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and share some key information with you.

Drop off and pick up
Children can enter school site through any of the gates.
In the morning, children will enter the school building through the Year 1 and 2 door.
Please remember, school starts at 08:45. If your child is late (arriving after 8.50), they must enter through the office and sign in.
At the end of the day, children will be brought out through the main office doors at the front of the school.
Things to bring into school
We have limited storage space. Please only allow your child to bring in:
• Packed lunch box / bag (If they have packed lunch)
• A water bottle
• A warm coat (if it is cold)
• Reading and Times Table record books
Things not to bring into school
We kindly ask that children don’t bring in:
• Large rucksacks, bags or P.E. bags (unless your child is swimming). as this helps us avoid clutter in the corridors.
• Cuddly toys and other things such as pencil cases and play things. We will be issuing all children with a fidget toy that stays in their school pack.
COSMIC
Your child’s COSMIC time will be on Tuesday afternoon.
P.E timetable
Indoor PE – Friday
Outside Games – Monday
We ask that your child is sent into school wearing their PE kit on their PE days.
For P.E we ask that children wear:
- Usual school white polo shirt or t-shirt and sweatshirt/fleece
- Shorts, joggers, leggings or tracksuit bottoms, (black, grey or blue)
- Trainers or plimsoles not school shoes
- We ask that children do not wear jeans, football kits or clothing with motifs on PE days
We have spare kit in the year group for any children that do not come into school wearing appropriate PE kit.
Earrings should not be worn to school on PE days. If they are newly pierced then you should send your child in with surgical tape covering them. We only allow one small pair of stud earrings in school at any time. Sleepers, dangly earrings and nose studs are not permitted for health and safety reasons. Children are also not allowed to wear any other jewellery including rings, bracelets and necklaces. We also ask that children do not wear make-up, false eyelashes or false nails to school.
Swimming
As part of our PE curriculum your child will be going swimming at Havant Leisure Centre, for approximately half a term in both the Autumn and Spring terms. Swimming lessons will take place on Monday afternoons. We will go swimming in classes, starting with Zebra class on 7th September. The children are asked to wear appropriate swimwear for lessons, googles and swim hats can be worn if required.
Reading
Reading is a fundamental, key skill which opens up the whole school curriculum for children and we look forward to working hard with you and your child to further develop their reading skills. Your child will bring a reading book home every evening and we would ask that you read with your child as often as possible. We ask the children to read at home a minimum of three times per week and hand their Reading Record in at school every Friday so that we can review and celebrate their progress.
Children who do not read at home will be invited to come along to our weekly reading club at playtime. Unfortunately, there is a charge for lost books and reading records. Working together will ensure we maximise your child’s progress.
Times Tables
Children also have a ‘Times-Tables Record’. This is to be used by you and your child to record their Tables practise. The record contains some ideas about how you can practise at home. Children are expected to practise their Tables a minimum of three times per week and bring their record book in everyday, we will record and celebrate their weekly practice on a Friday.
Behaviour
Behaviour is managed as per the school behaviour policy. We have many incentives in place to reward and celebrate positive behaviour. We also have our zone-board in both classrooms which is used to support our approach to behaviour. If your child finishes the day at the top of the board they earn credits towards our year group and school rewards. On rare occasions, a child may finish the day at the bottom of the zone board and in these instances, they may be asked to stay in during break time on the following day.
Attendance and Lateness
Absence and lateness has a huge impact on your child’s learning. We appreciate that there are rare occasions through illness where this can’t be helped but please support us in achieving the best for your child buy making sure they are in school everyday and on time.
Parent Meeting about Avon Tyrrell/Activity Week
On Friday 25th September at 2.30pm we will be hosting a chat in the school hall about the Year 5 residential trip to Avon Tyrrell. We will be sharing how the trip runs, what your child will experience, dates and payment details. We hope you will join us to find out about this exciting opportunity.
We are here to help!
We are looking forward to working together over the coming year to achieve the best for your child. Whilst we make every effort to answer questions at drop-off and pick-up, we might not always be able to chat at these times. If we are unable to answer questions at these times, we can also be contacted by the school office and an appointment made.
Thank you for your ongoing support,
