PSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
At our school, PSHE helps children develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to grow into confident, kind, and responsible individuals.
Each year group takes part in age-appropriate lessons exploring friendship, respect, kindness, and belonging.
Here’s a look at what each year group has been learning this term.
Year 1 – Respecting Others in and out of the Classroom
Our Year 1 pupils learned about the importance of respecting others — both inside and outside the classroom.
Through stories, discussions, and fun role-play activities, children explored what respect looks like in everyday situations.
They discovered how:
• Greeting teachers and friends politely shows respect.
• Listening carefully when someone else is talking helps everyone learn.
• Including others in play makes people feel valued and happy.
During the “Respect in Action” activity, pupils worked in small groups to act out scenarios showing respectful behaviour.
They finished the session with a short quiz to review what they’d learned and talked about how to show respect every day.
Key message: Everyone deserves respect, and every child can help create a kind, caring classroom.
Year 2 – Same and Different
In Year 2, pupils celebrated the things that make them unique while learning to appreciate what they share with others.
The lesson, inspired by Giraffes Can’t Dance, encouraged children to see that everyone has strengths, talents, and interests that make them special.
Through drawing, storytelling, and group discussions, children learned:
• To recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others.
• That differences make our classroom community richer and more interesting.
• That everyone is equal and should be treated with kindness and respect.
Pupils reflected on what makes them who they are — from favourite foods to weekend activities — and shared these with classmates.
The story helped them understand that even when we stand out, we all belong.
Key message: We’re all different, and that’s what makes us special — but we’re all equal too.
Year 3 – Exploring Kindness
Older pupils explored kindness through the characters and stories in The Rez comic and audiobook.
They listened to the adventures, noted examples of kindness and unkindness, and discussed how characters’ actions affected others.
During class activities, pupils:
• Identified what kindness looks and feels like.
• Reflected on how small acts of care can have a big impact.
• Gave “Agony Aunt” advice to the comic’s characters, helping them choose kinder responses.
The lesson finished with a discussion on how pupils could apply these ideas in real life — at school, at home, and in the community.
Key message: Kindness isn’t just about words — it’s about how we treat others every day.
Year 4 – Learning About Respect
This term, our Year 4 PSHE lessons have focused on understanding what respect really means — both for ourselves and for others.
The children explored what respectful behaviour looks like in different situations, such as at school, at home, and in the wider community.
Through group discussions and photo activities, they identified examples of respect and disrespect, learning how our words and actions can make others feel.
Pupils reflected on the importance of listening, kindness, and valuing differences, and talked about ways to show respect in their daily lives.
By the end of the unit, children were able to explain why respect is an essential part of building positive relationships and a happy, safe school environment.
Key message: Respect starts with understanding others and treating everyone with kindness and care.
Year 5 – Understanding Respect and Belonging
In this session, children took a deeper look at what respect means and how it connects to belonging.
They explored ideas such as friendship, inclusion, empathy, and teamwork, choosing five words that best describe respect to them.
Through discussions and “word bingo,” pupils thought about:
• What it means to belong to a group or community.
• How it feels to be new or different.
• Ways we can help others feel welcome at school.
The class reflected on how being sensitive, kind, and inclusive helps everyone feel like they belong.
Teachers also guided conversations around supporting children who may be new to the country or facing challenges, ensuring pupils understand that everyone has the right to education and respect, no matter their background.
Key message: Belonging comes from kindness, acceptance, and respect for everyone.
Year 6 – Taking Responsibility and Showing Leadership
Year 6 pupils built on their PSHE learning by exploring how respect, kindness, and responsibility prepare them for secondary school.
They discussed real-life scenarios involving friendship, peer pressure, and decision-making, thinking about how respectful choices build trust and confidence.
Activities encouraged pupils to:
• Reflect on how they can be positive role models for younger students.
• Understand that respect includes self-respect and setting healthy boundaries.
• Explore how teamwork and empathy help create a supportive community.
By the end of the unit, pupils felt more confident about how their actions influence others and the importance of treating everyone fairly and thoughtfully.
Key message: True leadership starts with respect, empathy, and doing what’s right — even when it’s not easy.
